Thing is yes loyalty was far more prevalent in past times but players did still leave for money or trophies. Loved both TC and Frankie Mac but they both left a sinking ship, although Frank to be fair re-joined when we had almost sunk. TC was a tough one though considering he was "claret and blue" through and through. Bobby Moore could have left earlier as well so if he had gone to Spurs how could that have affected his legacy?

I don't think it's necessarily always the players per se who have made this worse but agents.

Every era puts in very shit performances.... one of the worst West Ham performances I’ve ever seen was away at Charlton in the early 80s, Sir Trev and all, absolutely abysmal it was.

The all English team of 1964.
The English and Scottish team of 1980.
Ditto of 1986.
All small squads but loved by their fans.

None of the above let us down like the present bunch of overpaid mercenaries. We didn't have to put up with cunts like Payet and Arnie either.

Present day footballers make me want to spit at times.

Re: Is this the best squad West Ham have ever had?
The funny thing about everyone mentioning squads of yesteryear with 16 players as a maximum is that for many clubs in the championship and below that is still the present day reality today. They can't afford an expensive player on the bench picking his bunions.

Stubbo:

Play a 60's team against a modern one, with a 60's referee, and I'm pretty sure that the modern one would retire injured or bring a sick note from Mum.

Working on the basis that squad strength isn't about whether the squad of now would beat the squad of then, but is about the strength of the squad in the context of the rest of the teams in England / Europe, then it's hard to say it is.

Any team of modern footballers would likely beat any team of yesteryear footballers because the game has moved on in terms of physique.

But on the national and international stage, the current squad is less competitive in terms of challenging for leagues and cups than previous squads, so I'd say that no it isn't the best squad ever.

I'd say though that it's the best in the 'Premier League' era just about...although it's a debate between this squad and the 98/99 squad.

Re: Is this the best squad West Ham have ever had?
This question gets asked every year when we're on a good run. Then we lose a couple of games, a player or two leaves and all of a sudden it's the weakest squad ever.

I think the inflated price of players is making us think our squad is more vaulable than it really is, in reality we're still more or less in the same position in the table as we are most seasons.

Definitely feeling more positive than it's been for a long time though.

Re: Is this the best squad West Ham have ever had?
There is no doubt about it, our golden age was between 1964-86.

We had so many legends in that period, and our best 2 managers. We played some great football, won 3 FA Cups, one ECWC, one ECWC runners up and 2 league cup finals. Also the World Cup of course. What have we won since then?

However, we were always a few players short of really challenging for the league apart from 1986 when we stayed clear of injuries.

No comparison to today's lot.

Re: Is this the best squad West Ham have ever had?
Zico.

I thought I was going to be a half decent keeper so went to good teams to have a goal keeper coach.

I remember them saying if there is any doubt you might not hold it push it away. All the other keeper pushed the ball away ever time.when I was trying to hold it and some time spilled it when hit the floor.

It’s a modern day thing because the balls are so light.

I didn’t make it by the way.
